Assignment 2: Tech Stories
I interviewed my mom for the assignment about technology back in her day. She told me that getting a cordless house phone was liberating because she could still talk on the phone and move around, so she didn’t feel tethered to the wall. My mom also talked about how cable TV wasn’t in everyone’s homes until the 1970’s and there were only the main three channels early in her childhood. Once there were more channels they used a remote that went one way around the channels, so if you passed your channel you had to go all the way around again. The remote was also a long cable attached to the TV with a channel selector you could hold in your hands. When assigned research assignments in school they had to go to the library and look in the card catalog for what book and where it was, since there wasn’t internet access to just Google the information. My mom is a nurse at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and when she started working, there were no computers so she would have to handwrite all the charts for patients. Also, without computers they used typewriters and had to use white out for mistakes they made.
